Showcase: Deep Evolution

You were born in KwaNdebele and came to Johannesburg to study in Braamfontein, and it was there, in 2004, that you first started DJing. What was it about that moment and that city that pulled you toward the decks, and what role does where you come from play in the artist you’ve become?

I used to go and listen to DJs playing with vinyl back then, and I started falling in love with the music. Thanks to Blackhole [a Johannesburg house music party platform] for giving me my first break on their parties. Honestly speaking, I was scared. I couldn’t believe these people were dancing for me. After that, there was no turning back.

The name Deep Evolution carries real intention: “deep” and “evolution” are both loaded words in this music. Where does the name come from, and what does it capture about the sound and the experience you set out to create when you’re behind the decks?

The name Deep Evolution comes from the evolution of music when I’m behind the decks. My sound is something that makes people forget about their problems and enjoy the moment. My sound is so relaxed and chill. For me, it’s not about the dance floor. I want to make people enjoy the music, drinks, and conversation at the same time while they’re having fun.

You’ve shared stages with artists like DJ Fresh, Louie Vega, Charles Webster, Ralf Gum, and Atjazz across a career that started over two decades ago. What has that time and those experiences taught you about what it actually means to play well, and how has your approach to a set changed from where you started?

My lesson is to be humble all the time. Sharing stages with big names helped me get to play on major radio stations like 5FM, Metro FM, and Radio 2000. I remember 2008, sharing a stage with DJ Fresh, and he told me not to be big-headed in this industry. Always be humble, even if some will take advantage of it.

You have spoken about wanting the Deep Evolution name to be known across the whole world. Where does that ambition stand right now, and how does being part of the Beatlab community fit into where you are taking it?

Beatlab will help me grow the Deep Evolution brand into a global name. My plan is to see Deep Evolution known across the whole world, playing events like Tomorrowland and Ibiza. Right now I am busy pushing for international gigs, and last year I got the chance to showcase on Ibiza Global Radio [one of the world’s leading electronic music radio stations, broadcasting from Ibiza]. Having Beatlab on my side, I know everything will fall into place.

Glitterball Grooves is built around the midday peak: a Friday slot designed to give the day a lift at exactly the right moment. For someone whose journey in this music stretches back to a nervous first set in Braamfontein, what does it mean to have your sound in that space and reaching that audience, and what would you say to a Beatlab member sitting on a mix they haven’t yet put forward?

Let’s enjoy the journey together, and hopefully my mix will heal a lot of souls. My sound selection is a chilled, vibe kind of sound, something that will make people relax while they’re listening to the mix. Just enjoy the music. And to my fellow DJs: please don’t doubt yourself. Deep Evolution has played on South African national radio including 5FM, Metro FM, and Radio 2000, and appeared on Ibiza Global Radio last year.
